General Surgery

What is general surgery?

General surgery is a specific branch of medicine. Dr. Bell is an experienced board-certified general surgeon. He received advanced training to diagnose, treat, and manage a wide range of conditions that may or may not require surgical intervention.

If surgery is needed, Dr. Bell provides comprehensive and competent care before, during, and after your procedure. He offers general surgery for patients of all ages, including teens, young adults, and older adults.

What conditions can general surgery treat?

Dr. Bell provides general surgery to treat a wide range of conditions. Some of his areas of expertise include:

  • Gallbladder surgery
  • Hernia surgery
  • Anti-reflux surgery
  • Abdominal wall reconstruction

He performs melanoma (a type of skin cancer) resection and sentinel node biopsy. Sentinel Node biopsy is a surgical procedure that determines if your cancer has spread beyond the primary tumor and into the nearby lymph nodes and lymphatic system.

Dr. Bell is also one of only a few surgeons in Arkansas that provide advanced hernia surgery and robotic abdominal wall reconstruction.

How is general surgery performed?

Dr. Bell uses many surgical techniques to perform general surgery. However, he prefers minimally invasive procedures to ensure you get the best possible outcomes.

His general surgery techniques include:

Laparoscopic surgery

Laparoscopic surgery is a minimally invasive surgical technique. During the operation, Dr. Bell inserts a laparoscope, a flexible, lighted surgical camera, through a small incision in your abdomen. The laparoscope generates images of your abdominal area onto a computer screen.

Dr. Bell then makes a few additional small incisions to insert his surgical instruments and perform your surgery.

Robot-assisted surgery

Robot-assisted surgery is the most innovative surgical technique. To perform robot-assisted surgery, Dr. Bell uses the da VinciĀ® surgical system, which combines minimally invasive surgical techniques with advanced robotic technology.

With robotic-assisted surgery, Dr. Bell performs routine and complex procedures with smaller incisions, greater precision, more control, and better flexibility.

Traditional surgery

During traditional surgery, Dr. Bell makes a large incision through your abdomen to access your organs and perform the necessary procedure. Conventional surgery is more invasive and requires a longer recovery time.

Dr. Bell determines the surgical technique best suited for you based on your diagnosis, medical history, and overall health.
